Lizzie Vann, the new owner of the Bearsville Complex, will talk to us about the work of its restoration and her plans for the future. The 15-acre Bearsville Complex was designed and built in the 1960s and ’70s by legendary music impresario Albert Grossman, who managed Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin, The Band, and other remarkable artists. He chose Bearsville because of its pastoral setting alongside the banks of the Sawkill Creek. Although the complex survived Albert’s unexpected death in 1986, it never fulfilled Albert’s utopian vision.
A wholesale renovation began in 2019. The goal today is to encourage and support future generations of artists, in the same way that Albert intended. Facilities include the magical 400-seat theater and lounge-bar, a production soundstage with recording studio, two well-loved restaurants (The Little Bear and former Bear Cafe—now the Bear Cantina), Nancy’s Artisanal Cafe, and the Utopia Tavern, both in the Peterson House.
