Please join UCWN for our first face-to-face event since March 2020! We’ll gather at Past President Melody Newcombe’s home and garden, where we will pick up where we left off—seeing old friends, making new ones, and picnicking on the deck, as we hear author Violet Snow talk about her new book, To March or To Marry, a historical novel about suffrage and women’s clubs.

From 1868 to 1920, the women’s club movement swept across the U.S., gathering middle-class women together to form sisterly bonds, study culture, and work toward social reform. Though largely overshadowed by the heroics of the radical suffragettes, women’s clubs transformed society’s attitudes about gender and prepared women for work in business and politics.

To March or to Marry shows how crises in women’s lives shaped both the suffrage and women’s club movements. One of the protagonists is based on the author’s great-grandmother, whose letters reveal that her women’s club was central to her life as a wife and mother. Violet will also describe her research on women’s clubs in Ulster County in the same time period, precursors of groups like UCWN. Signed copies of the book will be available for sale.
