Join Melody Newcombe, past president of UCWN, on a tour of her organic market gardens and hear her talk about weeds, how to identify beneficial and pest insects, and companion planting. Afterwards, she’ll hold a garden question and answer forum.

Melody is a life-time naturalist, environmental educator, master gardener, and performer. Holding a horticultural degree, she was vice president of the Northeast Organic Farmers Association of New York, conference organizer and coordinator for the first organic farming conference to ever be held at Cornell University in Ithaca. She was also the founding farmer of the Community Supported Agriculture of Kingston (CSA), and past publishing editor of The Harvest Times International Newsletter on CSAs for farmers and consumers.

Melody’s philosophy is that: “We all share the planet and must serve to offer a safe haven for all living things great and small. Using herbicides, insecticides, and pesticides drastically upset the balance of nature by killing other living organisms, which in turn are killing us. How then can you produce healthful food and sustenance on a premise of death? Rather, I think of using life sustaining strategies to enhance life, plus sharing and breaking bread or veggies with other creatures. I also encourage beneficial insects, spiders, reptiles, amphibians, and birds by offering them food, shelter, and water to help in my gardening endeavors. The results are bountiful, fruitful, delicious, and rewarding in the beauty of life and healthfullness.”

Please wear flat shoes (no heels). and bring your gardening questions.
