101 Arabian Tales: How We All Persevered in Peace Corps Libya (1966-1969) is a book about how mostly regular people set out to change the world — or at least a small part of it — by joining John F. Kennedy’s brand new Peace Corps. The tales told by author Randy Hobler skillfully recreate the zeitgeist of that time in Libya as a collective memoir, garnered from in-depth interviews with 101 fellow Libya-Returned Peace Corps Volunteers. These volunteers were spread out over 900 miles resulting in a kaleidoscope of experiences, many of which fall under the category of “you can’t make this up!” Some of the attendees may be Peace Corps volunteers; Randy would love to hear your stories.
Randy Hobler is an expert and lively story-teller who weaves history, politics and human interest to make us care about the people that he writes about — both the Volunteers and the Libyans. It brings us to a time when many regular young people did extraordinary things as a matter of course and to a time when we were open to so many possibilities.
While you don’t need to read the book to enjoy the talk, you will leave wanting to read it!
