And what we can do to keep them

Ellen Messer is the co-author of “Backrooms: Voices from the Illegal Abortion Era,” stories of women and men whose lives were deeply impacted because abortion was illegal before 1973.

Although the book was first published in 1989, (with five subsequent publication updates), the stories still ring true and clear, and take on new meaning now that the historic Roe v. Wade decision has been overturned by the Supreme Court. In every book Ellen autographed, she wrote “With the hope that these stories are never our reality again.” Now these stories are our reality once again, amended by an even more vicious and draconian set of impending laws that would make criminals of those seeking not only to find interventional abortions, but sex education, birth control and abortifacients, as well. And the long arm of the laws driven by radical conservatives threatens LGBTQ acceptance and our human rights as well. It feels like we’re walking backward into our future, a future that will affect generations to come.

And the challenges we will talk about include:

— How to engage young people to take the threats to reproductive and broader human rights seriously
— How to “call people to action” to vote candidates into office
— How to move from our circles of influence into our circles of concern (from local to wider arenas)

Copies of Ellen’s book, “Backrooms: Voices from the Illegal Abortion Era,” are available in Kingston at Rough Draft, in Woodstock at The Golden Notebook, and in Saugerties and New Paltz at Inquiring Minds. All proceeds will be donated to the local chapter of The League of Women Voters. “If a single book could shake the young, even the not so young, out of their complacency, it is this one,” New York Times Book Review.
