UCWN hosted a lovely celebration of Melody Newcombe’s life at the Catskill Visitor Center with many testimonial memories of the founder of the UCWN in its current form. It will be an annual gathering of friends, with music and stories to keep Melody’s legacy alive. UCWN continues to a social connector for women and everything that matters to us. Thank you to everyone who participated in this joyful event. Thanks to our organizers Sheila Gould and Leslie Snow.
After a transition of duties for the officers, we are back! Still we struggling with too few to do the work needed to plan, publicize, and conduct events you have come to expect. We especially need help with the newsletter and website, as well as women to help plan and execute events. Judith Kerman has stepped up to offer her many talents as she rejoins the Advisory Committee. Please welcome long-time member, Judy, back. Thank you, Judy, for your contributions! Read more about Judy here.
We are looking forward to a call to action Zoom event on October 11 with author Ellen Messer speaking about her book, ”Back Rooms: Voices from the Illegal Abortion Era,” published in 1989 by Simon and Schuster and co-written by Kathryn E. May. It describes the past when women sought self-determination regarding their bodies and reproductive decisions. We will have copies of Ellen’s book at a few local bookstores. One hundred percent of the proceeds will go to the local Hudson Valley League of Women Voters, which does a great service encouraging everyone to vote and providing information on the candidates and their positions on the issues. Thank you, Sheila Gould, for creating this timely program to educate us all on the importance of protecting our human rights. Ellen Messer’s talk is not to be missed!
Stay tuned for announcements of events that allow us to enjoy the pleasant fall weather and each others’ company, such as rail trail walks and chats at Catskill Visitor Center Pavilion. While together, we’ll plan the programs that are meaningful to you. Let’s move UCWN forward, vigorously.
Thank you.
