Greetings Friends (past, present, and future members and guests of UCWN),

Cynthia Bell, (shown above) President of Hudson Valley League of Women Voters (HVLWV), received a check for $300 from UCWN for books donated by Ellen Messer and sold at Oblong Books. Ellen’s book, “Back Rooms: Voices from the Illegal Abortion Era,” was the subject of a vibrant Zoom presentation at last year’s UCWN October event. UCWN was delighted to give that check to HVLWV, as directed by Ellen. Thank you to HVLWV for all the excellent work done on behalf of women and the informed, voting to bend democracy to the arc of what this country stands for: equality. Our votes and voices matter. We’ll follow up with this topic, with more book sales to come. Pick up you own copy for a $20 donation at Rough Draft Books and Bar, Kingston; Golden Notebook, Woodstock; and Inquiring Minds, New Paltz and Saugerties.

We are excited to present our series on Aging with Grace for our May event. We’ll discuss what this looks like for us during our April meeting so that the components are relevant and impactful for all of us.

We’ll be following up on the great Travel Tips for Women event that member and sponsor, Kathe Krauss presented. We’ll discuss a potential curated Day in NYC and/or local gems to enjoy together for UCWN members. Bring your good ideas! We’ll also schedule a walk on a rail trail with a Brewery visit to enjoy as an extra get-together on Friday, April 28. Keep an eye on UCWN and let us know what works for you. We are all in this together! This is YOUR local social gathering group! Let’s post the outside events that interest you so that others may enjoy the many cultural and fun events, too.

Quick news bytes—Rachel Jackson, a long-time UCWN member, informed us that Rotary Club is planning an event on April 22 to clean up Kingston Rotary Park in honor of Earth Day. Advisory Committee member Dr. Judith Kerman has a concert upcoming to reprise, “Roses and Nightingales: A Concert of Sephardic Song,” with guitarist Bonnie Robiczek Meadow. Asbury Short Film Fest will be shown at Rosendale Theatre on May 6 and 7. We hope to get a group of UCWN members to enjoy this together. Watch your emails for more details.

Onward and Upwards,
Gloria Waslyn
